HASHIGUCHI, FREDERICK MINORU (1924- 2006)

Frederick "Fred" Minoru Hashiguchi (322-5-C) was born on July 23, 1924 in San Diego to Japanese immigrant parents, Kasuke Frank and Fuji Hashiguchi.
During World War II, the Hashiguchi family was relocated to the Santa Anita Assembly Center.  After several months, Frank's family (Kasuke Frank, Fuji, Shigetomo Lee, Miyoko Betty, Shigeharu Henry, Emiko Amy, William, James and John) were transported from California and arrived on 8/28/1942 at the Poston (Arizona) concentration camp 3, block 322-5-C. Miyoko Betty was the first in the family to leave Poston on 5/4/1943 after locating employment in Chicago. Fred was the next to leave Poston on 12/2/1943, when he found outside employment in farmwork in Clearfield, Utah.  Shigetomo Lee left Poston on 11/8/1944 when he reported for military service at Fort Douglas, Utah.  The remaining members of the Hashiguchi family left Poston on 9/5/1945 and returned to San Diego.
In 1944, Fred joined the U.S. Army and served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Company F, in France and Italy during the last months of the war and during the first years of the Allied Occupation through 1946. He remained in the military until 1949 as an Army Reservist.
After WWII, Fred returned to San Diego to join his family. Fred became a part of the  San Diego tuna industry as a pole fisherman. He stood on platforms mounted outside of the boats' rails, often in crashing waves up to their necks, hauling in fish that were often many times heavier than himself. Later, Fred became a gardener, a profession he held for over 50 years. Fred was a member of the Buddhist Temple of San Diego, VFW Post 4851 of National City, and a member of the San Diego Gardeners' Association.
Fred Hashiguchi, 81, of San Diego died on 2/17/2006 at the age of 81 years.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Miyoko; daughter, Irene Shaffer of San Diego; sisters, Betty Inahara and Amy Kaneyuki; and brothers Henry and John of San Diego, William of Harrisonburg, Va., and James of Sylmar.
