HORI, VIOLA TSUYAKO (UYEHATA) (1926-2012)


 
     Viola Tsuyako Uyehata (Poston block 17-10-B) was born in Menlo Park in 1926, the third child of Shiu and Misao Uyehata, itinerant farmers. During World War II, she was evacuated with her parents and sister, Lucile, to the Salinas Assembly Center from Gilroy.  A few months later, they were relocated to the Poston concentration camp 1 (block 17-10-B) in Arizona on 7/1/1942.  Voila graduated from high school while incarcerated and left Poston on 8/29/1944 to attend Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Her family departed from Poston on 10/24/1945 and returned to Gilroy.
  Violas husband, Hiroshi Hori served with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team  Company E during World War II in the European Theatre.   
      Viola worked for 25 years at the Citizens Savings Bank in San Mateo as a bank teller.  She was a member of Sturge Presbyterian Church and volunteered at the San Mateo JACL Community Center.
     Viola Tsuyako Hori of Foster City, died on 6/6/2012 at the age of 85 years.  She was predeceased by her husband Hiroshi (1983); and brother, Roy Uyehata (2001).
      She is survived by her son, Bruce (Diane) of South San Francisco and Beaverton, OR,  and Bryan (Kathryn) of Rancho Palos Verdes; daughter, Elaine Hill (John, 1999) of San Mateo; and sister, Lucile Masukane of Torrance.
