ISHINO, FUMIKO PENNI (KOBAYASHI) 1919-2015




     Fumiko Penni Kobayashi was born April 21, 1919, in Phoenix, Arizona, to her
Penni Ishino
immigrant parents, Shokichi “Joe” Kobayashi and Kotome (Nagata).  She spent her early childhood years in Arizona. The family moved to Los Angeles, California, where she graduated from Roosevelt High School, and worked at the Los Angeles Y.M.C.A.

     Penni was 23 years old when President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 after the bombing of Pear Harbor.  She was forcibly removed from Kingsburg, California to the Poston, Arizona concentration camp 1 on July 24, 1942. In March 1943, she attended a Community Welfare Meeting, held at the Gila River, Arizona concentration camp.  In July 1943, she left Poston, Arizona to begin work as a Reports Officer in Grosse Point, Michigan. Later, she attended the National Training School in Kansas City, Missouri. She returned to California and worked for the Board of Equalization Sales Tax Division in California.

    Penni moved to Seattle, Washington, where she met Roy Ishino.  They were married in August of 1953. She was a Teacher's Aide at Colman Elementary School, and later at Lowell Elementary School and retired in 1984. She was a devoted wife and mother of three boys, Erik, Larry, and Craig.  She and Roy shared their love of fishing, mushroom picking, and camping with their children.  

     Penni Ishino, 96, died on May 9, 2015, in Seattle, Washington. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Roy Yoshitomo Ishino; parents, Shokichi "Joe" and Kotome Kobayashi; sister, Osho (Kobayashi) Morioka of Japan; and brothers,  Lt. Col. Masao Thomas "Tom" Kobayashi, Reverend William "Bill" Kobayashi, and Joseph “Joe” Kobayashi (Poston block 305).

  She is survived by her sons Eric (Ron Shiley), Larry (Gwen), and Craig;  and granddaughter, Tori.
