Kakutaro Uchida (308-11-C) was born on November 24, 1870, in Odawara, Kanagawa, Japan. Mr. Uchida came to
the United States in 1902, living for a brief time in San Francisco, then
coming to Pacific Grove, California where he established the Pacific Grove Cleaners on
Grand Avenue in 1926.
During World War II, he moved his family to Fresno County to escape immediate evacuation, however they were evacuated a llittle later from Reedley, California. They arrived at the Poston, Arizona concentration camp 3 on August 4, 1942. He and his wife returned to Monterey on August 20, 1945 and continue their business.
Mr. Uchida, a
naturalized citizen of the United States, was an elder in El Estero
Presbyterian Church of Monterey and an active member of the Japanese American
Citizens League. With his wife, Yae, he made his home at 226 Laurel Ave.,
Pacific Grove. In association with his sons, he continued to
be active in the family business until he became ill on Sept. 26.
He was a resident of Pacific Grove for the past
66 years, died yesterday morning in a local hospital following a brief illness. He was 88.
In addition to his wife, he leaves five sons, Henry and George
Uchida of San Jose, Kiyoshi and Hideo Uchida of Pacific Grove and Hiroshi
Uchida of Monterey.
