During World War II, he was interned in the Poston III internment camp. After the war, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served as staff sergeant. Returning to Fresno, he met Sally, who later became his wife. They were active members of the local and national JACL.
Nakashima graduated from UC Berkeley, and soon after receiving his J.D. from the Boalt Hall School of Law practiced law first in private practice and then, from 1961 to1999, in partnership with Theodore K. Boynton.
He was active in local and national politics, and a three-time delegate to the Republican National Convention and served on the Republican National Platform Committee. Other appointments include a term with the California State Board of Medical Examiners, Board of Governors of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, vice president of the National JACL (Japanese American Citizens League), and the Board of Regents of the University of California. Nakashima was first appointed to the board by Gov. George Deukmejian in 1989 to fill an unexpired term, and reappointed by Gov. Pete Wilson in 1992 to a term expiring in 2004. He served on the regents’ educational policy and investments committees and on the Special Committee on UC Merced.
He is survived by his sister, Betty Jane (B.J.) Oki; his son, Lex; daughters Dale, Jann, and Mona; and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally; brother, Yukio; and sisters, Bernice and Eleanore.
